Baltimore Portrait Project

graphite, paper, craigslist, the Internet, sharing

i posted bi-weekly ads on baltimore.craigslist.org advertising free portraiture with a small catch: in return for one of my drawings, one must make a drawing for me. many expressed interest, some chose to participate, and after corresponding through email and creating our respective drawings, the exchanges took place in person or (more commonly) through the mail.

in the beginning this project was my way of struggling with the futility of artwork, a solution that allowed me to make work for myself and another person at the same time. it quickly morphed into something much more reciprocal, less of a gift and more of a fair exchange. i offered generosity to strangers, and they returned the gesture. we worked together to make something beautiful.
